Virtual IOP is a structured, three-day-a-week mental health program delivered fully online for Massachusetts adults. Each session blends group therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric care from home. It offers more support than weekly therapy while leaving room to keep up with work, school, and daily life.

What is a Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program?

A virtual IOP is a structured level of mental health care for people who need more than weekly therapy, but not the daily intensity of a partial hospitalization program. Overstory's virtual IOP delivers that care online, through a HIPAA-compliant Zoom platform, from any private space in Massachusetts.

Virtual IOP is a step up from weekly therapy on the mental health care spectrum:
Single person icon
Weekly outpatient therapy
1 session a week
Group of people icon
Intensive outpatient program (IOP)
3 days a week, around 3 hours a day
Schedule icon
Partial hospitalization program (PHP)
5 days a week, around 5 hours a day
Home icon
Residential treatment
Full-time care at a treatment facility for an extended time
Hospital icon
Inpatient hospitalization
Short term 24/7 hospital care for acute mental health crises

Most people enter virtual IOP when weekly therapy isn't helping enough, or when stepping down from a PHP or a hospital stay. Virtual IOP gives you that added structure and support without leaving home, or stepping away from work and school.

What Does Our Program Entail?

Our Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program delivers structured, evidence-based care for individuals who need ongoing support while staying engaged in daily life. Your treatment includes a comprehensive set of services to guide your recovery.

Group Therapy

Group therapy works with small groups of like-minded peers and focuses on education and skills development. Topics might include “How to manage depression” or “Building healthy habits to improve anxiety.” Our curriculum utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) interventions that are evidence-based.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is one-on-one time with your therapist to work jointly on your challenges and potential solutions.

Medication Management

Our psychiatric team prioritizes a holistic approach to mental health, incorporating medication when it would add meaningful value to your care. We work closely with you to prescribe and adjust medications in a personalized manner.

Family Support Counseling

Sometimes it helps to incorporate family and friends in the recovery journey. Our team will work with you to identify your support system and how they can contribute to your healing.

Connection to Resources

An Overstory team member will work with you to identify areas in your personal life where you need hands-on support, whether that be hobbies, housing, food security, career and job planning, and more. Furthermore, Overstory Health will ensure continuity of care by making necessary referrals post discharge and collaborating with any current or new providers.

Weekly therapy isn't giving you enough support
Stepping down from a PHP or a recent hospital stay
You want more structure while working or studying
Depression, anxiety, or trauma affecting daily life
You need therapy, groups, and medication management
When IOP may not be the right fit
You need the daily intensity of a PHP
Active mania or psychosis requiring inpatient stabilization
You're not physically located in Massachusetts

If you're not sure where you fit, our intake team can help you decide during your assessment.

What a Typical Day Looks Like

Virtual IOP is designed to fit into a real life, not take it over. You attend three days a week for about three hours per session, so there's room to keep working, studying, and caring for the people who count on you. Each session blends group therapy, skills practice, and check-ins, and most patients stay in IOP for 8-12 weeks before stepping down to weekly outpatient care. The structure is the medicine: consistent contact, real cohort relationships, and steady progress you can build your week around.

Our Virtual IOP Program Can Help You With

Virtual IOP at Overstory is built to treat the conditions that benefit most from intensive, daily clinical care. Our multidisciplinary team delivers evidence-based modalities including CBT, DBT, and ACT.

Many people we treat are managing more than one condition at the same time. Our virtual IOP is designed for that reality, and your treatment plan is built around your whole experience, not a single diagnostic label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does virtual IOP work as well as in-person care?
Chevron Icon

Virtual IOP isn't a lighter version of treatment. It uses the same evidence-based model, the same curriculum, and the same licensed clinicians as our in-person program, the difference is the delivery, not the standard of care. Many people find virtual care easier to stay consistent with, since there's no commute and it fits into a normal week. During intake, we'll help you decide whether virtual or in-person is the better fit.

What's the difference between IOP and PHP?
Chevron Icon

Both are intensive outpatient levels of care, the difference is how much structure you need. IOP meets about three days a week for three hours and is built to fit around daily life. A partial hospitalization program (PHP) meets five days a week for about five hours and is the most intensive option short of hospitalization. Many people step down from PHP to IOP as they progress.

What do I need to join virtual sessions?
Chevron Icon

You'll need a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a private space where you can talk openly. Sessions run on a HIPAA-compliant Zoom platform, and we'll send everything you need to log in before your first day.

How long does virtual IOP last, and what happens after?
Chevron Icon

Most patients stay in virtual IOP for about 8-12 weeks, though the exact length depends on your symptoms, how you respond, and your clinical team's recommendation. As you make progress, many people step down to weekly outpatient therapy.
