In-person IOP is a structured, three-day-a-week mental health program delivered at Overstory's Boston, MA clinic. Each session blends group therapy, individual therapy, and psychiatric care in a calm, supportive setting. It offers more support than weekly therapy while leaving room to keep up with work, school, and daily life

What is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a structured level of mental health care for people who need more than weekly therapy, but not the daily intensity of a partial hospitalization program. Overstory's in-person IOP delivers that care at our Boston clinic, where you attend sessions on-site with a consistent care team and a small group of peers.

IOP is a step up from weekly therapy on the mental health care spectrum:

Weekly outpatient therapy
1 session a week

Intensive outpatient program (IOP)
3 days a week, around 3 hours a day
Schedule icon
Partial hospitalization program (PHP)
5 days a week, around 5 hours a day

Residential treatment
Full-time care at a treatment facility for an extended time
Hospital icon
Inpatient hospitalization
Short term 24/7 hospital care for acute mental health crises

Most people enter IOP when weekly therapy isn't helping enough, or when stepping down from a PHP or a hospital stay. IOP gives you that added structure and support, plus the routine of getting out of the house and the face-to-face connection of being in the room with your care team and peers.

What Does Our Program Entail?

Group Therapy

Group therapy works with small groups of like-minded peers and focuses on education and skills development. Topics might include “How to manage depression” or “Building healthy habits to improve anxiety.” Our curriculum utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) interventions that are evidence-based.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is one-on-one time with your therapist to work jointly on your challenges and potential solutions.

Medication Management

Our psychiatric team prioritizes a holistic approach to mental health, incorporating medication when it would add meaningful value to your care. We work closely with you to prescribe and adjust medications in a personalized manner.

Family Support Counseling

Sometimes it helps to incorporate family and friends in the recovery journey. Our team will work with you to identify your support system and how they can contribute to your healing.

Connection to Resources

An Overstory team member will work with you to identify areas in your personal life where you need hands-on support, whether that be hobbies, housing, food security, career and job planning, and more. Furthermore, Overstory Health will ensure continuity of care by making necessary referrals post discharge and collaborating with any current or new providers.

What a Typical Day Looks Like

In-person IOP is designed to fit into a real life, not take it over. You attend three days a week for about three hours per session at our Boston clinic, so there's room to keep working, studying, and caring for the people who count on you. Each session blends group therapy, skills practice, and check-ins, and most patients stay in IOP for 8-12 weeks before stepping down to weekly outpatient care. The structure is the medicine: consistent contact, real cohort relationships, and steady progress you can build your week around.
