Teen Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program
More than once-weekly therapy, without the hospital. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons, from home.

Overstory's teen virtual IOP supports Massachusetts adolescents ages 13 to 18 through structured group therapy, individual therapy, weekly family therapy, and psychiatry. Care is delivered over Zoom on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 2 to 5 PM.

What is a teen virtual IOP?
You can view an intensive outpatient program, or IOP, as a middle-ground treatment. It's a mental health program that provides more structure and care than once-weekly therapy but allows your teen to stay at home and keep up with school and everyday life.
Sessions happen on Zoom (HIPAA-compliant): no driving, no waiting rooms, no fuss. Your teen joins from a private space on their phone, tablet, or computer.
Built for ages 13 to 18, the program blends group therapy, individual therapy, weekly family therapy, and medication management. All care is delivered by a Massachusetts-licensed team specializing in adolescent care. Most teens come to us because weekly therapy isn't moving the needle, or to step down from inpatient, residential, or PHP care.
Is virtual IOP right for my teen?
You're probably here because something has already happened: a crisis, a teacher's call, or weekly therapy that isn't enough. Here's how to know if Overstory's teen virtual IOP is the right next step.
If you're not sure where you fit? Our intake team will help you find the right care.
What a typical week looks like
Sessions take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 2 to 5 PM. Each session blends group reflection, peer-supported discussion, and skills practice. Weekly family therapy and individual sessions are scheduled separately. Because our IOP starts at 2 PM, some teens will need early dismissal from school. Our team will coordinate with your teen's school, 504 team, or IEP team to make the transition stress-free.
Most teens step down to a less intensive weekly outpatient therapy with a provider who can keep up momentum and support long-term recovery.
If a higher level of care is needed, our intake team will help you find a hospital-based teen PHP or another in-person partner.
Family is part of the treatment, not a side note.
Lasting change happens at home, not just in session. That's why every family meets with the clinical team weekly.
Every week, your family meets with your teen's clinical team. This ensures the family can promote healing the best they can.

Conditions we treat in our teen virtual IOP
Most parents aren't searching for a diagnosis. They're looking for effective treatment when their teen is struggling. We support adolescents through the situations and conditions below.
Many people we treat are managing more than one condition at the same time. Our virtual teen IOP is designed for that reality, and your treatment plan is built around your whole experience, not a single diagnostic label.
If you don't see your specific condition listed, contact our intake team to learn whether our virtual teen IOP is a fit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Adolescents ages 13 to 18 in Massachusetts are eligible. A parent or guardian must consent and participate in weekly family therapy. Your teen needs a private space and a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone. For ages 19 and older, see our adult Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program.
Yes, partly. Sessions run from 2 to 5 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, which overlaps with the end of the school day at most Massachusetts schools. Many teens will need an early-release arrangement on IOP days. With your authorization, our intake and clinical team will coordinate with your teen's school counselor or 504 / IEP team to manage attendance and missed coursework.
Research published in the Joint Commission's quality journal (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9395212/) found that virtual intensive programs can achieve outcomes comparable to in-person care. While that study examined adults, peer-reviewed research on adolescent virtual care has shown similar engagement and clinical outcomes. Overstory's teen virtual IOP uses the same evidence-based clinical model as our adult program, reviewed by our Strategic Advisory Board at McLean Hospital.
Family involvement is part of the treatment design, not an afterthought. You'll attend weekly family therapy with your teen, receive parent coaching to support them between sessions, and get regular progress updates from the clinical team. You're an active participant in the work, not an observer.
The program is intensive by design, and consistent attendance drives the best outcomes. Occasional missed sessions are addressed individually with the clinical team. If poor attendance becomes a pattern, we meet with you and your teen to understand what's getting in the way and adjust the plan together.
